I know Twitter has been around for a while now but it seems like lately it has been really picking up steam. I know some people think Twitter is dumb, and maybe they’re right. Most people realize that it’s a microblogging tool. Pete Cashmore over at Mashable says that it was the talk of the town at SXSW and I’ve heard from many that it makes a fun addition to any conference. Jason Calacanis interviewed Evan Williams (co-founder of Twitter) to find out if they have any plans for making money (sure). I still have this gut feeling that Twitter is basically just a different kind of RSS system.
I’m not sure what to make of Twitter. It’s already being used by more than just teenagers. Events, such as the upcoming BarCamp DC, are using it to keep people informed. It’s not surprising that super-nerd shopping site woot! is tweeting. But it doesn’t end there - real companies are getting into the mix. JetBlue is using Twitter to keep folks updated on special fares and other announcements.
Personally, I think Twitter is kind of interesting. My second daughter is due to arrive in October and I had thoughts of tweeting updates to the family - but apparently some people would think that’s a really bad idea.
