Computerworld’s Rock Stars
Jan 23rd, 2008 by Andy
There’s a new Computerworld article out about Rock Star Coders. Several folks at Viget talked with Mary Brandel, the author of the article, about the concept of rock star coders. Our connection to the “phenomenon” is that Emily used the term in one of our recent creative job postings. Overall the article is a good read and it’s interesting to see the reaction people are having to the term “rock star”.
Brian’s recent post about the article does a great job of explaining our take on what makes a great coder - whether you call them a rock star or not. In the article, and associated comments and blog posts, people seem to be getting caught up on the idea that a rock star coder must be a jerk. Obviously, at Viget we’re not out looking for jerks. In fact, if you read the original job posting, or if you know anything about Viget, you’d see that we’re all about building a great team - dare I say rock band? And really it’s more like an orchestra. Okay, enough with the dumb metaphors. We use the term “rock star” with our tongue in our cheek. Overall, we’ve had great success with our new approach to creative job postings so something is working right. In fact, we have recently added almost an entire new string section to the Viget Orchestra!
